I look at this collection, and I flashback to pictures of my own family back in the 1940’s. Coming from family who lived for the game of baseball, I appreciate the Jackie Robinson, forties Americana inspiration of the Umit Benan Fall 2014 Collection. The lighting effects put you in the mind of “if you build it, they will come,” – you can almost hear the clean, crisp noises of the field lights turning on by just looking at the runway created by the Turkish designer.
Using a cast of all Black models, of all ages, Umit Benan brought a sense of diversity that spanned across racial and age boundaries; but whether you want to get deep in the race and fashion discussion, the models really brought Benan’s theme to life. His fabrics also brought relevance to his inspiration; using tweeds in autumnal colors, and a fit that grounds us back to what tradition really is. One great thing about Benan’s aesthetic is that it’s wearable of the runway; this collection was styled to inspire the street dude, or the suit-and-tie guy.
