The 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards aired tonight on CBS, and promised to be an awards show with Given Awards (30 Rock, Alec Baldwin, Tina Fey) and some surprises as well. Neil Patrick Harris has his debut as host for the show, giving reason as to why he is more than just a doctor and womanizer (all on TV, of course).
On E!’s Red Carpet, the guest host, along with Jay Manuel, was Nene Leakes from Bravo’s Real Housewives of Atlanta. While I usually admire her “tell it like it is” attitude, I thought that it translated as being rather tacky for the Red Carpet. She claimed to be not amused with any of the looks from the Red Carpet, when there were clearly some amazing gowns and dapper tuxedos being worn on the Carpet. Granted, sometimes people “love” gowns just for PR purposes, or based on the popularity of the celeb, but for Nene to not have been impressed by anything doesn’t say much about the true tone of the Red Carpet.
I don’t consider Nene being too current on pop culture, current events or anything about Fashion (Lisa and Sheree’s lines do NOT count); she’s just Nene – nothing wrong with that, but she is just a funny, cool chick in Atlanta that everyone loves to love. Then again, none of the people they have on the Red Carpet really understand fashion, except for Jay, but at least the other hosts are savvy to the Red Carpet concept. I also think that he makeup team could have done a better job on Nene; the orange hair and red lips made her look a bit clownish.
Enough about Nene (whom I do love, and would still take her Dunk shopping with me if she ever wants to).. back to the Red Carpet.
This year’s Red Carpet seemed to be very safe; The only looks that I think were daring and adventurous were Kristin Chenowith and Blake Lively.
Red, White and Black were the dominant colors for most of the looks, and there were quite a few looks that attempted the Beaded trend (some hit it, most missed). Marchesa was the designer of the night, as two of my favorite looks were from their house.
Here is my list of the Good and the Bad, with Obama being the Worst (continue reading to see what I mean),
Olivia Wilde – She tops my list for Best Dressed this Year! In a stunning Marchesa Gown that is fresh from the runways of the Marchesa Spring 2010 Collection last week, Olivia translates this look better than the model from the show!
Mila Kunis – There is nothing 70’s about this look! She goes against the grain with a shorter dress, but the tulle gives it the necessary length.
Heidi Klum – Pregnancy always accentuates her beauty, and this Marchesa gown makes her and baby radiate the Red Carpet.
Sandra Oh – She cleans up good when she’s not in scrubs! I loved the gold beading and the rope detail, but the red shoes really gave this look that extra pop!
Neil Patrick Harris – His Show look was perfect! I only like shiny when its White, and Neil rocked it!
_______ The Bad:
Shar Jackson: It looks like the Fashion Army started shooting arrows at this dress in hopes it would die before hitting the Red Carpet. Sometimes if you can’t score the big designers to make your dress, go for a simple gown that flatters your shape. This is a total mess.
Phoebe Price – So this is where the curtains went when Furniture Stores go out of business…
Victoria Rowell – Seriously, she gets the WORST Dressed for the night. We all love Obama, but we should only wear the cool Obama shirts.. not make a dress out of it! This is just the worst thing ever! This is the only time I wish Joe Wilson was around.. maybe he would have egged her and forced her to go home and change.
Sarah Silverman – Right color, wrong shape. And the extra material on the sides make this dress looks super cheap.
Justin Timberlake: Never Thought I would have the post-sexyback era JT on the Worst Dressed List. The lapel needs some major steam time, and the pants need a better fit. Also, the white shirt and white necktie wash out JT’s face.
