Journalist and anthrax magnet, Tom Brokaw, was the keynote speaker for The College of William and Mary commencement this past weekend. In order to get laughs from the crowd, he decided to give a wise crack against my alma mater, The University of Virginia… he goes on to say “glad at least that I am not at UVA in Charlottesville, because then I would have had to speak slower and use shorter words”
Ok, here we go:
1. When did William and Mary become a rival school to UVA? I could understand if you were at Virginia Tech’s graduation, but William and Mary? What a waste of a joke!
2. When people diss UVA, they normally say that we are over-achievers, stuck up, yuppies, etc… NEVER do they imply that we are stupid… So the whole “speak slower” thing isn’t even an accurate stereotype..
3. I hope no one laughed at the joke: Let’s get something straight… Thomas Jefferson attended William and Mary, ONLY to go on a create the University of Virginia… now that says alot.
I love my Tribe from William and Mary, so no love lost between us! But Tom Brokaw needs to research the history between schools before attempting to start a rivalry.
